Dawn Potts, AIF®
Financial Advisor / Partner
Dawn Potts has more than two decades of experience in the financial services industry, with the last 15 years spent as a financial advisor and partner at Prime Capital Investment Advisors. She holds her Series 7, 6 and 63 securities registrations as well as her life & health insurance license, and she has earned her designation as an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®).
Dawn grew up in Wisconsin and is a Packers fan (“Go Pack Go!”). After receiving her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, she spent eight years as an art teacher. Her career took a turn in 1994 when she began working for Primerica Financial Services, educating families about how to advance financially using insurance and investments. She found that she was passionate about financial matters.
A divorce led her back to teaching for another six years in the Blue Valley School District in the Kansas City area—until she found and made the move to Prime Capital Investment Advisors which is headquartered there. She hasn’t looked back. In fact, she uses her experience to help educate women who may suddenly find themselves single to become financially confident.
Dawn loves the water and was a competitive swimmer from fifth grade through her first year of college. She is an active, energetic person, and she and her husband live at the Lake of the Ozarks, where she loves to fish, boat and walk her beloved dog, Gracie.
Families and Individuals
“People and relationships are the most important thing to me,” Dawn says. “My clients are wonderful, and I am fortunate to work almost exclusively by referral. I have developed friendships that have lasted decades, and a significant number of my clients have asked me to work with their entire family.”
In her work with individuals, couples, multigenerational families and single women, Dawn starts by learning as much as possible about each client’s lifestyle, family members, personal financial situation and retirement vision. She starts with goal-setting, with an emphasis on long-term, realistic objectives. Her financial advice includes but goes well beyond investments, from life insurance to legal documents to updating beneficiaries and TODs. The custom financial plans she puts together cover nearly all aspects of a client’s financial life in their quest to grow, protect and pass on their wealth.
“Of course, the way we’re structured and our team atmosphere at Prime Capital Investment Advisors allows my clients access to vast resources and expertise. As your financial advisor, it is my job to put together your overall financial plan, which includes managing risks like the need to protect your family members with tax-advantaged life insurance. And it includes the cost of health care and the potential for needing long-term care at some point, especially as we get older. In my experience, starting to plan while you’re young is better than trying to catch up later.
“Additionally, as part of my educational process about retirement, I help people understand that having a 401(k) is only part of what’s required in order to retire. There are specific methods we must use to help ensure their money will last. Much like we use dollar-cost-averaging to grow wealth, we have to use dollar-cost-averaging to get out of the market—to withdraw money as reliable income for retirement,” Dawn says.

Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
Dawn focuses her financial advisory practice equally on individuals and business owners. A successful business owner several times over herself, Dawn says, “In many cases personal and business finances overlap, and business ownership brings opportunities to help increase the success of your personal financial situation if you structure things correctly. It can be like a chicken or egg situation as to which comes first.”
She and her husband are self-professed “serial entrepreneurs” currently active in real estate development, construction and commercial property ownership. Dawn recently sold a construction cleaning company she started and ran for more than 11 years in Kansas City. “I understand the issues surrounding business ownership and the juggling of time and attention required. I find that I am able to quickly understand the issues my clients face and zero in on important items that need addressing,” she says.
